Welcome campers, you have arrived.
We invite you to shake off the week, meet the peeps you're living with for the weekend, and share a community meal. Arrive. Drop in. Connect. The Celebration has started!!!
The goal was to create a night that felt centralized, together, community-oriented, and family friendly. So don't scatter, ye campers! It's gatherin' time.
The Theme
In 1959, Motown Records was founded, and a new genre of music was born. Motown music is what inspired this night. Why? Because whenever we go to soul music dances, people are insanely, ridiculously HAPPY!
Just check this video clip. They're smiling, bouncing, twistin', shoutin', jivin', jumpin', and hella grooving. It's the kind of music that makes people interact on the dance floor, smile at strangers, shout lyrics we all know, and wonder why we don't listen to this music more often?!?
Dress Code
Warning, this is a vintage zone!
Think 60s prom. Chiffon, taffeta, rayon. Bowties, suspenders, vests. Beehives, slick backs, and updos. Cat-eye glasses or thick nerdy specs.
Think 70s disco. Yes Jill, you can totally bring your platforms, bell bottoms, and afros. These too are welcome in Soul Town :)
Potluck
To foster the community vibe, we're asking everyone to bring a potluck dish to share.
Think block party meets church social. But tonight the only block we live on is Soul Town, and the only church we go to is that of The Divine Rhythm Society. And this church celebrates by dancing :)
So grab a plate. Dish up some food. Sit, relax, and eat. Make some friends as the tunes begin...
Soul Town Music
The musical journey of the night takes us from those pure Motown beginnings into Soul, Disco, and Funk, blended with some of your favorite current genres, like House and Breaks. In essence, the 4 DJs will play soulful tunes from 1959 to the present 2013.
That's because soul is everywhere. DJs today still weave in old vocals, bass lines, and samples to their current works. This night honors the journey of soul through the eras.
We'll start with some Disco House spun by 3r@in (Brain) to ease us into the night.
Then, we'll hear Classic 60s Soul from our headliner Speakeasy Ray. In fact, Ray is literally writing the book on Motown right now, cataloguing and reviewing every record that the label ever released. OMG! How lucky are we to have such an expert spinning actual vintage vinyl for us!
Later in the night, we'll get even sweatier and crazier with Soulful Funky Breaks by Edmundo and Funky House by rrrus until the music stops at 2am.
Temple of Yum
Meanwhile, over in our Moroccan chill tent, there will be even more yumminess served up. And this space is open til 4am for all you night owls!
Live Music 10-11:30pm
Cat's Cradle (Greg Habiby and Gloria Justen) will play a dancey, chill set to ease you into the groove. Seductive, electric string lines and sampled sounds will be woven over, under and through evolving patterns of earthy, textured beats.
Tea Service 12am-?
Shamanic zombie tea service and Tarot readings by Jesterror. Your tea master will have a nice selection of oolongs, puerhs, and herbals. Seatings of 4-6 people at a time. Limited cups available. Come and go as you please. Other spontaneous tea servings may happen too :)
Dancey Chill 11:30-4am
Our 3 DJs of the evening, Mo Corleone, Flutterby, and Kristal Magic will play a luscious blend of dancey chill, world music, and spirit songs. Dance if you'd like. Or lay on the mats and take it all in. They're here to make you feel yummy.
But make sure to rest up, loves. Don't stay up too late. There's SO much more coming tomorrow...
